Tourism in Morocco : Tinghir

                                                               Tinghir, Berber stronghold

Tinghir, whose name can also be spelled Tinghir Tinghir or Tinrhir the gh pronounce r in Tamazight, the langueber at the entrance of the Todra Gorge is a large and vibrant city that derives its wealth of mines surrounding money, and its beautiful palm grove. The city lies on the border between the territory Ait Atta, to the Jebel Sagho and the territory of the Ait Hadiddou, dating back to the slopes of the High Atlas to Imilchil. A large Jewish colony was established, until the 50s, and its members integrated into the life of the city, like elsewhere in Berber country, formed the largest contingent of goldsmiths. In addition to the money from local mines, they also worked the gold brought by caravans from Timbuktu, and in particular produced these bracelets called 'moon and sun.

- The caravan wealth :

Indeed, until the advent of the Alawite dynasty, Tinerir will be a milestone on the caravan route, which goes to his Sijilmassa (Rissani) to Timbuktu. These caravans, and the wealth they brought, were a source of envy, and local tribes, such as Ait Ait Atta Moghad or perceived a tribe to protect the time of transit through their territory. The wealth thus accumulated to purchase caravans many slaves that can enhance the palm by many earthworks. Their descendants, the Harra Mourabitun (of Harratin) still live in some Douars at the end of the palm.
At 1,300 meters above sea level, Tinerir is a bastion of Berber culture, and one would find a lot of similarities with the small Breton village, one that resists the invaders. Resistance is now cultural, speaking Amazigh Tinerir, and the feeling of belonging to the Berber community is stronger than elsewhere.

Apart from the palm, very green and irrguée by Wadi Todgha, water is scarce, and much more difficult than in the Dades agriculture. But for the tourist, the scenery is beautiful.

And here are some pictures of the city of tinghir :

Places to visit :
Stroll through the palm grove

Of course this is the first thing, the park is very rich, and easily half a day in turns of his plots, separated by seguias that irrigate in a complex distribution of water rights is going on, and a expertise preciously transmitted. It takes hundreds of gallons of water per day to grow well a young palm tree, and in a region so close to the desert, all water, whether from rain or melting snow, are precious.

Todra gorges

Continuing northward, first you go up a steep road and then into the Todra Gorge. This is where the land ends nomadic shepherds, and you can spend the night in a somewhat sur-real atmosphere. Hotels do not have running electricity and the generator off around midnight, we find ourselves in a magnificent landscape, the time of the candle, far from civilization. An evening out you can extend on the terraces above the river in summer.

Riding, mountain biking, climbing

Tinghir is a good starting point for active holidays. We can offer you trekking in the mountains, accompanied by mules, it is also possible to rent mountain bikes or go on a horse ride.
