Tourism in Morocco : Agadir

A modern city :

Agadir is named after a Berber word meaning town or fortified granary. Initially Berber village of fishermen, fortified, and used by the tribe Ksimas. In this "Porto Meseguinam" Portuguese sailors then engaged in piracy and smuggling. In 1505, João Lopes de Sequeira built a fort at the foot of the hill, to prevent access to the harbor, and in 1513 King Manuel I ° formalizes the takeover by buying the box, and installing a garrison. Agadir was then called Santa Cruz de Cabo de Aguer (Cape Gue), and secures land and sea routes traffic for gold and slaves (Sudan, Guinea ...) But the tribes of the region unite, under the authority of Saâdiens, and March 12, 1541, after six months of siege, the Portuguese surrendered and abandoned Agadir. The region will in dissent with the arrival of Alawites who retaliated once restored their authority, shut Agadir.

The city reborn at the entrance of the French in 1913, the most popular tourist resort in Morocco while fewer than 7,000 inhabitants! With Aeropostale, especially with fishing (Agadir argument Safi title first sardine port in the world), the city is taking off, brutally arrested February 29, 1960 with a deadly earthquake (more than fifteen thousand dead) and destructive.

The former Kasbah Agadir
Agadir was almost totally destroyed and rebuilt anew, from 1962 on a seismically safe ground. The reconstruction was planned, organized, and the architectural heritage of Agadir, disregarded planning reflects this, with many buildings typical of gross 1960s architecture.

Today it is an international modern resort, where the German, English and even Russian brands mingle with signs in French and Arabic, busy, which differs little from those that might be found anywhere in France or Spain. Nothing remains of Portuguese buildings, fortifications and only a few of the old Berber agadir.

Agadir activities other than tourism: it is a major fishing port, including sardine. It is also the commercial center of the Sub, where production of the large farms in the area (tomatoes, fruits, vegetables), which is then sent by truck in Europe arrive. Finally, it is an important university town. This gives it a real entertainment, and it is possible to live as Moroccan Agadir.

And here are some pictures of Agadir:

A visit to Agadir and around:

the Citadel

The ancient walls were reconstrits on the heights of Agadir, the citadel reminiscent of the old medina. From up there, you have a beautiful view of the bay and six kilometers of beach. The rest of the site was bulldozed after the earthquake, and is in fact a vast necropolis.

the medina

Fully restored in the 1990s, the Medina of Agadir is a successful reconstitution which houses a hundred skilled craftsmen. To visit, avoiding cars tour packages.

Tiznit and Aglou

About an hour from Agadir Tiznit is the capital of goldsmiths silver Morocco. A quiet little town that has little real interest outside the jewelers shops. But 15 km to the north is the small town of Aglou, with its beautiful coastline and small fishing huts clinging to the edge of the beach.

Imouzzer Ida Touatane

Height, in the Anti-Atlas, Immouzzer is a small Berber village that is home to beautiful waterfalls. The path is easy, built (and many crowded on weekends). It stunts themselves are very nice, and this tour is done in half a day, lets out pleasantly from Agadir beach atmosphere.

The reserve of Souss-Massa

Bird sanctuary where many migratory birds pass, it is best explored with a guide. At certain times (especially during the breeding season) access may be limited.
